(Newser) – It's not just the Mayan calendar that's raising 2012 worries—our own calendar is stoking fear, too. This year, there are three Friday the 13ths, compared to the usual two. That last happened in 2009. What's even stranger is that exactly 13 weeks pass between the first and second occurrence, and between the second and third: The first is today, followed by April 13 and July 13, the News Journal reports. That hasn't happened since 1984, which was, like 2012, a leap year.

The next time this will happen is 2040, says an expert known as Dr. 13. So what is it about the date that people find so scary? Texts throughout history have associated a threat with the date: Jesus, for example, dined with 12 apostles (that's 13 people total) before he died on a Friday. Norse legends say not to eat in groups of 13. The Knights Templar were jailed on a Friday the 13th. But the owner of a pagan bookstore calls the fears a "self-fulfilling prophecy." There is "strong power in people convincing themselves something unlucky will happen," he says.

ปี 2527 นับเป็นปีที่ไทยเผชิญปัญหาเศรษฐกิจค่อนข้างสาหัส เนื่องจากได้รับผลกระทบจากการที่สหรัฐอเมริกาขึ้นค่าเงินดอลลาร์ จึงทำให้ค่าเงินบาทของไทยที่ผูกติดกับดอลลาร์ถูกหิ้วสูงขึ้นไปด้วย
ค่าเงินบาทที่สูงได้ซ้ำเติมปัญหาของไทย ทำให้การส่งออกสินค้าโดยเฉพาะสินค้าเกษตรของไทยแข่งขันลำบาก ในที่สุดทำให้ในวันที่ 2 พฤศจิกายน 2527 พล.อ.เปรม ติณสูลานนท์ นายกรัฐมนตรี ประกาศลดค่าเงินบาทลง จาก 23 บาทต่อดอลลาร์สหรัฐ เป็น 27 บาทต่อดอลลาร์สหรัฐ โดยแถลงเหตุผลต่อประชาชนว่าเพื่อส่งเสริมการส่งออก
ปฏิกิริยาที่เกิดขึ้นจากการลดค่าเงินบาทค่อนข้างรุนแรง เพราะนอกจากประชาชนบ่นว่าทำให้ข้าวของแพงขึ้น แล้วยังทำให้ปัญหาเศรษฐกิจแปรเปลี่ยนเป็นวิกฤตการเมืองอีกด้วย
ในช่วงที่ประกาศลดค่าเงินบาทนั้น พล.อ.อาทิตย์ กำลังเอก ผู้บัญชาการทหารบก (ผบ.ทบ.) ไม่ได้อยู่ในไทย แต่อยู่ที่รัฐฮาวาย สหรัฐอเมริกา พอทราบข่าวการลดค่าเงินบาท พล.อ.อาทิตย์ไม่พอใจอย่างมาก รีบบินด่วน พร้อมคณะกลับมาตั้งหลักที่กองทัพภาคที่ 2 พร้อมคณะนายทหารคู่ใจเมื่อวันที่ 6 พฤศจิกายน 2527 ประกอบด้วย พล.อ.ปฐม เสริมสิน เสนาธิการทหาร พล.อ.เทียนชัย สิริสัมพันธ์ รองผู้บัญชาการทหารบก พล.อ.บรรจบ บุนนาค เสนาธิการทหารบก พล.ร.อ.นิพนธ์ ศิริธร ผู้บัญชาการทหารเรือ พล.อ.อ.ประพันธ์ ธูปะเตมีย์ ผู้บัญชาการทหารอากาศ จากนั้นร่วมกันทำหนังสือด่วนที่สุดถึงนายกรัฐมนตรี แสดงความเป็นห่วงการลดค่าเงินบาท และแนะนำให้ปรับปรุงคณะรัฐมนตรี
ต่อมาวันที่ 7 พฤศจิกายน 2527 พล.อ.อาทิตย์ออกทีวีช่อง 5 กับช่อง 7 ช่วงหลังข่าวภาคค่ำ วิจารณ์เรื่องการลดค่าเงินบาทอย่างดุเดือด พร้อมกับตัดพ้อน้อยใจว่า การลดค่าเงินบาททำให้การใช้จ่ายของกองทัพมีข้อจำกัดมาก รู้สึกเสียใจมากที่รัฐบาลลดค่าเงินบาท จนคิดอยากลาออกจากราชการ เพราะตนเองไม่มีความสามารถพอที่จะทัดทานมิให้รัฐบาลลดค่าเงิน จนเป็นเหตุให้ประชาชนและกองทัพต้องเดือดร้อน
ขณะที่ ม.ร.ว.คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช หัวหน้าพรรคกิจสังคม ในฐานะพรรคร่วมรัฐบาล ได้ออกอากาศทางช่อง 3 กับ ช่อง 9 ในเวลาเดียวกัน ชี้แจงเหตุผลความจำเป็นในการลดค่าเงินบาท
เหตุการณ์ครั้งนี้เป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของความขัดแย้งระหว่าง พล.อ.เปรม กับ พล.อ.อาทิตย์ กระทั่งในเดือนพฤษภาคม 2529 พล.อ.เปรม มีคำสั่งปลด พล.อ.อาทิตย์ ออกจากตำแหน่ง ผบ.ทบ.
