สงครามต่างดาวของสปีลเบิร์ก และ ทอม ครูส

ทำไมกลับมาทำหนังมนุษย์ต่างดาวอีก หลังจากทำมาหลายงานตั้งแต่ E.T., Close Encounter of the Third Kind และซีรี่ส์ชุด Taken ผู้กำกับสตีเวน สปีลเบิร์กบอกว่า “ผมต้องทำหนังมนุษย์ต่างดาวร้ายๆ สักเรื่องก่อนที่จะหมดไฟ” และหนังมนุษย์ต่างดาวร้ายๆ ที่สปีลเบิร์กเลือกทำก็คือ The War of the Worlds งานจากนิยายรุ่นคุณปู่ของเอช. จี. เวลส์ ว่าด้วยเรื่องราวมนุษย์ต่างดาวบุกโลก ที่เคยเป็นละครวิทยุดังกระฉ่อนในปี 1938 และเป็นหนังไซไฟสุดฮิตปี 1953 แต่ในฉบับของสปีลเบิร์กนั้นจะอัพเดทใหม่ให้เป็นยุคปัจจุบัน ให้ตัวเอกของเรื่องคือเรย์ (ทอม ครูส) หนุ่มชนชั้นกรรมาชีพในนิวเจอร์ซี่ที่ไม่ได้เป็นพ่อที่ดีของลูกๆ นัก (ดาโกตา แฟนนิ่ง และ จัสติน แชตวิน) เมื่อมนุษย์ดาวอังคารมาบุกโลก เรย์ต้องไปเป็นแนวหน้าเพื่อกอบกู้โลก

เทคนิคพิเศษของหนังนั้นไม่ต้องห่วงต้อง“ยิ่งใหญ่อลังการ” สปีลเบิร์กบอก “แต่ก็เหมือนกับ Saving Private Ryan หนังเรื่องนี้ไม่ได้ถ่ายทำจากกล้องสกายแคมตามแบบฮอลลีวู้ด แต่จะถ่ายจากมุมมองของคนทั่วไปที่อยู่บนพื้นดิน และพยายามเอาตัวรอดไปด้วยกัน”
